Does everyone need to attend Studienkolleg?
Not everyone needs to attend Studienkolleg. It is only necessary for students who don’t have 13 years of education. In case you have 12 years of education, you are expected to attend an extra year, 2 semesters of studienkolleg and then qualify for the end exam, also known as FSP.
In another case, if you have 12 years of education but have a very good IIT JEE Advanced rank or have already done a year of bachelor's, you may be exempted from the Studienkolleg requirement. However, it entirely depends on the universities concerned. You generally need a B1/B2 level of German proficiency, and based on your domain of interest, you might or might not need to sit for TestAS.
Even the process of Studienkolleg differs based on the university and location. In some cases, you can directly apply to the studienkolleg and you get called for the Entrance exam in German, while in other cases, universities refer you to the respective studienkolleg which invites you for an entrance examination.
