How to write the most effective GMAT waiver request/essay

The majority of Universities ask you to submit a waiver request form or ask you to write an essay on why you are taking a GMAT waiver and how you are complementing other skills against candidates who submit. To strengthen your waiver request:

  • Highlight your total years of professional experience, especially in leadership or decision-making roles
  • Emphasize your quantitative and analytical expertise by referencing specific projects or tools you've used (e.g., data analysis, financial modeling, Excel, SQL)
  • Mention any advanced coursework, online certifications (like Coursera, edX), or prior academic achievements that reflect your aptitude
  • Demonstrate your readiness for academic rigor through examples like managing multiple work deadlines, mentoring teams, or previously handling intensive academic or professional development programs

Requirements and Eligibility for a GMAT Waiver

Each business school in the USA has different criteria for GMAT waivers. However, common eligibility requirements include:

  • Extensive professional experience (typically 5+ years)
  • Strong academic background (usually a high GPA in undergraduate or postgraduate studies)
  • Advanced degrees (such as a Master’s or PhD in a quantitative field)
  • Certifications like CPA, CFA, or equivalent. Confused between MFin and CFA? Check this out.
  • Leadership roles or a clear career progression in managerial roles.

Some schools also require a separate GMAT waiver request with documentation or a personal statement explaining why you should be considered.

Will a GMAT Waiver Impact Your Application?

It may or may not - the impact of a GMAT waiver on your application largely depends on the school’s evaluation philosophy.

Schools with Minimal Bias towards GMAT Score: Some schools like MIT Sloan, Babson College, truly practice holistic admissions, meaning that a waived GMAT doesn’t disadvantage you if the rest of your application is strong. These schools assess your professional achievements, academic rigor, and leadership potential without giving undue weight to standardized testing. Hence, if your profile demonstrates analytical skills, impact, and career growth, these schools won’t penalize you for skipping the GMAT.

Schools where GMAT still Matters: Some top-tier programs offer waivers but still treat the GMAT as a strong competitive asset, especially for scholarships or borderline profiles. Without it, your application may need to go above and beyond in all other areas. For example, NYU Stern offers GMAT waivers but recommends the GMAT to strengthen your candidacy, especially if your undergrad GPA is average.

We recommend that you check out the comprehensive list of top universities and their GMAT waiver requirement here before drafting your application.

Conclusion

If you're a working professional with a strong academic and career track record, pursuing an MBA in the USA without GMAT is very possible. While waivers offer flexibility, they also demand that your profile speaks volumes in terms of leadership, experience, and analytical skills.

Anshul Pokharna
Admits from EDHEC, BITSOM

I worked with Bijal Gandhi during my MBA application process, and I’m genuinely glad I did. When I first started, I was focused on going abroad. But after a few discussions with my parents, I began exploring Indian options too — that’s where Bijal really stepped in.

She never gave templated advice. Instead, she helped me think through both options carefully — understanding my profile, career goals, and what I really wanted from an MBA. Her approach was balanced, honest, and very thoughtful.

One thing I truly appreciated was how seriously she took BITSoM. A lot of people would have dismissed it just because it’s a new school, but she did her homework. She looked into the faculty, curriculum, industry connects, and overall potential. Her analysis gave me the confidence to apply — and eventually accept the offer.

If you’re looking for someone who’ll truly guide you — not just help you apply — Bijal is someone you can trust.

am super happy to recommend Bijal! She was an amazing mentor who guided me through a big career change from medicine to management. I got into UCL, which top 9 in the world…I was clueless about what course to choose, which university to choose , but Bijal’s guidance and support were spot on. She’s super friendly, and always available to help.Bijal not only provided me with valuable insights and advice but also ensured that I was well-prepared for every step of the process. She was consistently available to answer my questions and offer support, and her enthusiasm and passion for her work are contagious.
I can surely say that no one understands what course you need and university you pick, beacuse I have seen friends struggle taking universities and courses recommended by consultants as they get money through tieups she really never compromised and I really love this about her.

What struck me most about Bijal was her commitment to delivering on her promises. She did everything she mentioned . I had a smooth and successful experience. Her guidance and mentorship were invaluable, and I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to work with her. Bijal made the whole process smooth and stress-free.
